Asthma

Question: What Do ARDS, Asthma, Bronchitis, COPD, Emphysema, Cystic and Pulmonary Fibrosis, Cancer, Pneumonia Have In Common? Answer: Glutathione Depletion

The content of this article is from the book “The Comprehensive Guide to Glutathione”
by Dr. Jimmy Gutman MD FACEP

The underlying mechanism common to Asthma or other lung disorders is low glutathione status in the lungs which contributes to the inflammatory process. Consuming Immunocal should increase glutathione, reducing inflammation and thus improving the symptoms…” “This trial has shown quite impressive results with regard to the health benefits of this Immunocal formulation in the nutrition of seriously ill advanced lung cancer patients. Other clinical studies showing the efficacy of Immunocal have been performed and published by several clinical centers.”

  • Asthma : ” When oxidant levels grow too high or Glutathione levels too low, the inevitable result is tissue damage. Remember that Glutathione is the most critical of all naturally-occurring antioxidants and that it effectively supports exogenous antioxidants such as vitamins C and E…”
  • Bronchitis, COPD: It is well known that most lung diseases are characterized by weak antioxidant activity and impaired glutathione-related enzyme systems. Taking advantage of this information, a group of French researchers tested to see whether Glutathione screening could predict a predisposition to pulmonary diseases. They tested subjects for the absence of a gene (GSTMI) responsible for a specific Glutathione enzyme. About 47% of the French population lacks this gene. found that heavy smokers with moderate chronic bronchitis were missing this gene 66% of the time and that smokers with severe chronic bronchitis were deficient in 71% of cases. They concluded that factors diminishing Glutathione function — in this case a hereditary factor — put individuals at higher risk for respiratory problems…” Other studies determined that COPD patients were very sensitive to low Glutathione levels after even light exercise, demonstrating the precarious balance of glutathione in these patients and the great importance of maintaining adequate stores of Glutathione.
  • ARDS : ” Recognizing the severe oxidant-antioxidant imbalance and  Glutathione depletion that comes with this condition, many researchers have put NAC under the spotlight. G.R. Bernard and his team at Vanderbilt University tested the usefulness of intravenous NAC for the lungs. Both in the lab and in clinical trials they found increased oxygen delivery, improved lung compliance (elasticity) and an improvement in the condition of pulmonary edema patients…”
  • PULMONARY FIBROSIS: “In pulmonary fibrosis, fibroblasts — cells in part responsible for the fibrous scar tissue — grow excessively in both number and activity. Tissue cultures made of these cells revealed that the presence of Glutathione down-regulated their growth, implying that Glutathione may slow the progress of pulmonary fibrosis…”
  • CYSTIC FIBROSIS ” Dr. Larry Lands, director of the cystic fibrosis clinic at McGill University in Montreal, aptly points out that inflammation is central to cystic fibrosis, that inflammation always precedes lung infection, and that lung infection almost inevitably follows severe inflammation. Continued inflammation depletes antioxidants and Glutathione even more and a vicious circle ensues…”
